Message From the President
Season’s Greetings As we approach the Holiday Season we have the opportunity to reflect on the events of the last year and to look forward to increased prosperity in 2010. We have been experiencing a tough recession; however, depots continue to do well. This resilience is a wonderful testament to our purpose and the work we do together. On behalf of Encorp’s staff and Board of Directors, I want to wish all of you and your loved ones health and happiness in the New Year. Handling Fee Panel of Depot Owners Several months ago I invited some 30 depot owners to participate with Encorp on a panel that will examine future (starting in spring 2012) handling fees. I am pleased to report that the majority have accepted this invitation. As well the members of the Council of Depot Owners (CODO) have agreed to participate and to act as a steering committee. I expect to have our first conference call in mid December and to begin our work in the spring of 2010 with the ultimate goal of Encorp presenting a handling fee proposal in about two (2) years at the Annual Depot conference in October 2011. I will provide regular updates to all depots through this forum and the CODO newsletter. I would like to extend another invitation for those who have not responded and or are interested in participating in this project to contact me directly as soon as possible to ensure that you are included in the first meeting. New Products added to Electronics/Electrical Program Late last year, the government announced a dramatic expansion in the products to be covered by a stewardship program commencing in July 2010. Depots under contract with Encorp to handle televisions, monitors, computers, etc., have been advised of the new products (VCR, DVD players, audio systems, etc) that will be coming back starting next summer. If you have any questions please contact Tyler Garnes. However, there are many other products that will be managed by other stewardship agencies and not Encorp; namely, cell phones, small appliances, florescent lamps, household batteries and many other electrical products. We have chosen to stay away from these products out of a concern that depots would be overloaded and/or there are potential handling and safety risks. We have advised the new stewardship agencies of our concerns and asked them to contact Encorp if they would like to have a depot act as a collection location. We will consult with each operator to make the right decision. Similarly, if you are approached directly, please contact Depot Operations before agreeing to collect these new materials. As a general rule we are advising depots to avoid collecting fluorescents lamps and household batteries. The volume will be insignificant however the safety risks are relatively high.

Electronics Program Omnibus Study Results
Awareness of the Return-It Electronics Program has increased significantly this wave! Here are a few of the results gathered from our most recent study. There is a significant increase in total aided awareness of the Return-It Electronics program. Currently awareness is up twenty-two points above October 2008 (62%) and nearly four-times higher than April 2007 (23%) before the program launched. The majority of this increase comes from those who indicated "yes, aware" rather than those who "remember hearing" about the program.
Awareness in the Okanagan (87%) and the rest of Metro Vancouver (86%) are particularly strong relative to the other regions, while the North saw the largest jump in awareness (up 30 points from last October), followed closely by the Okanagan (up 26 points). Demographically, there are a few slight differences. Older individuals are significantly more aware of the program, males are also are more likely to be aware compared to females. Directionally, as income rises, so does awareness. More detailed findings will be available soon. Author: S. Sigmund

Caps Off - Be safe
Due to safety and efficiency, caps should be removed from all beverage containers prior to bagging for pick up. If your Depot has not implemented this procedure please ensure that "caps off" becomes common practice at your depot as soon as possible. Bottles with caps left on can become a safety issue for transporters and processors. A bag can become excessively heavy due to residual liquid left in the bottles; thus, more difficult to lift. Since a bottle with the cap off is more likely to drain, it helps to have the customer remove the lids prior to returning them at your depot. At the processor level, there is a risk of bails popping, causing the wire to snap and could potentially injure an employee as a result. If the bottles contain air, compacting a bail of bottles is more inefficient. The more bottles that have the caps off, the smaller the risk for bottles to snap back, breaking the bailing wire. We recommend that all depots get buckets to place on the sorting tables for your customers to put the caps in. Collect all the caps and give them to your driver in a separate, easy to carry bag. If your transporter is unable take the caps, please notify us and we will be glad to assist you. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact Encorp. Author: J. Zuijdervelt

Regional Operations Managers (ROM) - Contact Person
The Operations team works together to provide the best possible service to all of the Return-It Depot owners and operators, as well as the Return-It Electronics Collection Sites. To strengthen the relationships with all locations, we have separated the depot territories amongst the three Regional Operations’ Managers; Krystin Beck, Jeroen Zuijdervelt, and Doug Merrier. This will provide depots and collection site operators with a consistent contact person from Encorp Pacific to discuss and address any issues or concerns. If you require information on improvements for your location, your Regional Operations' Manager is always there to help and offer advice based on their extensive experience working with other depot operators. For EOLE collection sites, if you require more information on the program and its procedures, you should also contact your Regional Operations' Manager. Please refer to the link below to find out which Regional Operations' Manager is your liaison with Encorp Pacific. Author: C. Chan

End-of-Life Electronics Collection Safety
With the upcoming holiday season and increased inventory, Return-It Electronics Collections Sites are reminded to handle all EOLE material with care. Please take the time to have a quick safety review with all your staff to go over the Electronics Recycling Program Manual and the contents and procedures of the Emergency Spill Kit. As a reminder for those sites that have received broken or bare abandoned material, please ensure to immediately place these items into a black UN Super Sack and fax in an incident report to initiate a pickup of this material. Do not place this material with the rest of your EOLE, as it is considered a hazardous material and must be transported/handled differently than your regular end-of-life electronics.
When placing broken or bare material into the UN Super Sack, ensure that you are not overloading it. Any broken material in the super sack should not go higher than the top edge. For any questions or concerns, please contact Linda Park at 604-473-2408. Author: L. Park

Semiahmoo Bottle Depot
Semiahmoo Bottle Depot is the most recent location certified as a 5-Star Depot. Heemin Lee and his staff have raised the bar for themselves and for their customers and given the depot a brand new look and a makeover. This depot has been servicing the South Surrey and White Rock residents for the past decade. They continually work towards excellence in creating the best possible customer experience at their depot.

Abbotsford Bottle Depot
Congratulations to John Woo and his dedicated staff for making Abbotsford Bottle Depot the first 5-Star certified Return-It Depot in Abbotsford. John and his wife, Younghye, are the proud owner/operators for the past 11 years. They continually strive to improve their depot's operations. In 2008, they upgraded to the Generation 3 System. After the completion of these upgrades, they quickly realized that their customers recognized the efforts which went into improving their facility. First and foremost, these changes facilitated better customer service via more efficient transactions. Then, early in the summer of 2009, they committed to upgrading their depot to meet the 5-Star certification criteria.
If you would like more information on the 5-Star Program, please feel free to contact the Depot Operations Department at Encorp Pacific. Author: K. Beck

Return-It to Win-It 2010
At this year’s Depot Conference, we were pleased to present the 2010 Return-It to Win-It depot promotion to the many attendees. The response was better than ever! Maybe it was the new family oriented grand prize, or the brand new look or maybe it was the extra advertisement insertion that drew many operators to sign up on the spot. Whatever it was, we’re very excited about this year’s contest. What does the Return-It to Win-It Depot Promotion do for participating depots? - Raises awareness of your depot in your local community
- Attracts new customers
- Increases return volumes at your depot
- Rewards your customers
- Engages and motivates your staff
After the conference, we mailed out a copy of our Return-It to Win-It promotion information brochure and sign-up sheet which outlined the key features of the promotion to all depot operators who did not sign into the promotion at the conference. We have included a PDF copy of this brochure at the bottom of this article. Not only is it a great marketing strategy for depots, it also fulfills their annual marketing expenditure requirement. By signing into the promotion depot operators won’t have to complete the 2010 Marketing Planner (mailed out later on this year) and they will be participating in a full-service promotion. There will be more choices of Celebration Tour Days during the promotion however the sooner depots sign up, the better their chances of getting their preferred dates. Author: J. Hogendoorn

School Recycling Program Update
The 2009 - 2010 Encorp Pacific BC School Recycling Program is back for another exciting year! This year, the Elementary program will be running until June 11, 2010 and the High School program will be running until May 14, 2010. Our programs give schools a great opportunity to fundraise, in addition to being eligible to participate in The Return-It Man @ School program as well as other fun contests. Check back with us in the New Year for more information on how Return-It Man could potentially visit a participating school in your community.
So far this year we have 346 schools registered and they have already collected over 1.1 million containers! To receive a list of schools in your depot's territory (school district) and to recieve additional school program brochures, please contact Manny Sahota at manny@encorpinc.com or at (604) 473-2419. Return-It Electronics: Program Update
The Return-It Electronics Program had an exciting year in 2009. We project to collect almost 14 million kg on 40,000 pallets by the end of 2009. Each month had a steady increase over 2008, bringing the total of collected material, since the program’s inception, to over 26 million kilograms on over 75,000 pallets. If all of these pallets were lined up end to end, this would stretch over 91 kilometers! A great job to all of the collection sites and their staff for all their hard work! Seven new collection sites were opened in 2009, including two sites for broken or bare display devices. Ralph’s on Mitchell in Richmond and Ralph’s Auto in Surrey have both helped to divert these potentially hazardous electronics away from the public and our collection site staff. More information on these sites can be found at: www.return-it.ca/broken. This year, we continued to open collection sites in more rural locations such in Quesnel, Gibsons and Revelstoke. Next year promises to be even more exciting, as Encorp gears up for the launch of Phase II, set for July 2010. This will see the inclusion of electronics such as personal audio systems, home audio systems, vehicle audio systems and home theatre systems (i.e. VCRs and DVD players), as well as cordless and corded telephones. As the Return-It Electronics program expands, we will be searching out more collection opportunities for permanent collection sites, non-permanent drop-off events, and even into return-to-retail to help service more of BC. Drop-Off EventsIn 2009, Encorp Pacific teamed up with Regional Districts throughout BC and hosted one day Drop-Off Events. These events allowed for cities in BC that do not have a permanent electronics collection site, to drop off their acceptable End-Of-Life Electronics for recycling, free of charge. A total of 16 Drop-Off Events, from Invermere to the Queen Charlotte Islands. Each event included media coordinated by Encorp. On top of Encorp's marketing efforts, Regional Districts also promoted the events through their own marketing channels. In total, 178 pallets of End-Of-Life Electronics were collected, equaling an astounding 57,962 kilograms, which has been diverted from B.C. landfills.
Check out www.return-it.ca/dropoff for information on past, and any upcoming, Drop-Off Events. We are currently contacting various Regional Districts about coordinating events for next year. If you have any questions on these events, please contact Linda Park at linda@encorpinc.com. If you have any questions please contact Tyler Garnes. Author: T. Garnes, L. Park

Bottle Drive DVD, Coming Soon
Bottle drives have been on the decline and in an attempt to increase bottle drive frequency, Encorp Pacific and CODO members have been working together to produce a Bottle Drive DVD. This DVD will help outline the procedure for organizing and executing a successful bottle drive. The draft version of this DVD has been made and we should have the final version completed by summer 2010. Once the DVD is produced, we will have it available for sale on our online Supply Outlet. The price is still to be determined. This DVD was derived from ideas presented in Cowichan Valley Bottle Depot's Bottle Drive Package. We would like to thank Sophie Roberge from Cowichan Valley Bottle Depot for her efforts in supporting the creation of this DVD. Author: C. Chan

Depot Technology - Dyson Airblade
Recently, Depot Operations had a chance to meet with representatives from Dyson where they presented a unique and technologically advanced hand dryer called Dyson Airblade.
Dyson Airblade is the fastest and most hygienic hand dryer on the market today. It dries hands in 12 seconds with a high-velocity sheet of cool air. Instead of heat and evaporation, water is 'scraped' from the hands using a sheet of air traveling at 640 km/h, making it up to 80% more energy efficient than warm air hand driers. The Airblade is the only hand dryer certified by NSF International as it complies with their strict protocols for a hygienic hand dryer. A HEPA filter removes over 99.9% of bacteria from the air, so your hands are dried with only purified air. Dyson stands behind their product by offering a 5 year parts, 1 year labour guarantee. For more information visit www.dysonairblade.ca or contact Danielle Stevens of Dyson at 1-877-397-6622. Author: K. Beck

New Depot Crates Coming Soon
Earlier this year blue crates were designed and manufactured, by Pacific Injection Molding, to replace the Coca-ColaTM red crates. Unfortunately, due to the high content of recycled plastic in the blue crates, they were not as strong as we had originally anticipated. Therefore, the blue crates will be replaced by a new version that is much more durable. We have tested 'Version 2' of these blue crates and have found that they require some improvements. We are currently working on 'Version 3' and we expect them to become available in the Spring of 2010. Once we receive the new and improved crates, we will be replacing the original blue crates that were ordered. After these replacements have been shipped out, we will make the 'Version 3' crates available for sale online at our Supply Outlet. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Charlene Chan at 604-473-2421 or charlene@encorpinc.com. Author: C. Chan

Encorp, Orwak and the Olympics
Encorp and 2010 Winter and Paralympic Games We have a number of initiatives underway to showcase the world class performance of the British Columbia beverage container recycling system. We are collaborating with a number of municipalities in the lower mainland to ensure that collection bins for containers are well distributed throughout the streetscapes and public spaces that are going to see a real increase in games traffic. Secondly, our consumer education programs are being ramped up for the period of the games. Finally, we have partnered with the Coca-Cola CompanyTM and its affiliate, Coca-Cola RecyclingTM, to ensure that all the PET containers distributed in the Olympic venue sites will be collected and returned for recycling. This will permit Encorp to refund the deposit and CRF amounts to CokeTM who has committed to invest these monies in a legacy project in an East Vancouver community centre. As a special initiative, Encorp is renting 15 ORWAK compaction units to CokeTM so that all PET containers collected at the Olympic venues will be compacted before removal thereby reducing the number of transportation trips and the associated carbon footprint. At the end of the games, these compactors are being sold to specific depot operators at a special price. ORWAK Compaction Project As reported at the depot conference, we have completed our successful pilot testing of the ORWAK model 5040 at Kensington and Vancouver Central Return-It Depots. We are now proceeding to a controlled rollout of an additional 15 units to depots who have renovated to incorporate the Generation 3 handling system. These units will be installed in April of 2010. Thereafter, we will determine where the next round of the introduction of compaction should occur with a likely focus on depots that require long haul transportation. Please contact Depot Operations if you wish more information on this innovative initiative. Author: N. Hastie

Keep Your Depot Safe and Accessible - Remove the snow
Each year as winter approaches, depot safety becomes a big concern. In many parts of British Columbia, we have already seen the first snowfall of the season. If your depot does not have snow removal equipment, please ensure that you purchase it as soon as possible. Please do not wait until the snow starts to fall before purchasing these items. Once, the snow starts to fall it is in greater demand and they become more difficult to find and purchase. If you already have this equipment, please take it out of storage and have it ready for use at your depot. Shoveling the snow and salting your premises are very important and can greatly reduce injuries at your depot. Please clean your parking lot, driveway, and entrance for your customers and transporters each day prior to opening your depot. Don’t miss out on customers and pickups due to snow causing limited access to your depot. Remember that customers will visit another depot if your lot is not accessible. Please also note that transporters may not pick up from your depot if they can't get onto your premises. We've seen this happen last winter. Thank you for your cooperation. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. Author: J. Zuijdervelt

Council of Depot Owners
Council of Depot Owners held Meeting #13 on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at Encorp's office in Burnaby. The meeting was facilitated by the Regional Operations Team along with Paul Shorting (Chair, Nanaimo), Tom Geddes (Vice-Chair, Trail), Vince Spronken (Duncan), Louise Beaton (Parksville), Lisa Chase (Vernon), Janice Song (Coquitlam), Willy Kim (Surrey), Aly Mitha (Burnaby) and of regrets Kelly Gorman (Victoria). Austin Kim of BBK Bottle Depot in Prince George joined the committee as a guest for the day. The committee came together as a volunteer gathering in November of 2006 to exchange ideas and leverage the knowledge of depot owners. Since then the members have been giving their valuable time and efforts to share ideas and be their own sounding board to better our Return-It Depot system. They have dedicated themselves to developing and improving on business methods that will, in equal measure, benefit the network of Return-It Depots and Encorp. This meeting was no exception, the members brought forth many innovative ideas and initiatives for the coming year including a production of a Bottle Drives how-to DVD, re-launch of the ‘Caps-Off’ program, and in large act as the Steering Committee for the Future Handling Fee Panel. CODO welcomes fellow depot owners as guests and observers as well as potential committee members. Please contact Paul Shorting at paul@nanaimobottledepot.ca for more information. Author: K. Beck

Post Depot Conference Review
2009 Depot Conference
This year’s Depot Conference was held at the Executive Plaza Hotel in Coquitlam on October 8 and October 9. Thanks to a great venue and superb depot turn out, the conference was a great success. Attendance: - Depots and Non-Depot EOLE Sites- 100
- Transporters - 13
- Processors - 5
- Vendors - 25
Our vendor tradeshow showcased 25 companies that sell and distribute many of the products that our depots utilize on a daily basis. To make this event even more exciting, many vendors were generous enough to donate gifts that were drawn as prizes before the cocktail hour. Testimonials from depot operators (What depot operators enjoyed the most): - "Meeting Encorp staff and networking with operators."
- "Everyone was friendly and seemed to genuinely care."
- "Enjoyed the opportunity to put faces to the names of the individuals we work with and speak with by phone every day."
- "Great to discuss problems with other depot operators."
- "Exposure to some of the latest innovations with equipment and machinery available."
- "A lot of planning, preparation, and coordination (team work) was apparent."
Each year we look at the previous depot conferences for ways to improve next year's conference. We take under advisement all of the comments that are on the conference evaluation forms. Thank you for taking the time to put down your thoughts regarding the conference. For more information about the conference or to view the pictures, please log into the Depot Operators’ Intranet. We hope to have an even better turn out next year. Author: C. Chan

Olympics and Transportation
Impacts of the Olympics on Transportation
If you have not already heard, the Olympics is coming to Vancouver. The potential impact of time is not just the 2 weeks while the games are on, but potentially for 7 weeks. On January 29, 2010 the Olympic Media Centre opens, and visitors start to arrive for the games. The actual games don’t start until February 12th (lasting until February 28, 2010), but the Paralympics start on March 12 and last until March 21st. All told this is a total of 7 weeks. Closures, Facts, Stats and Figures: 9 Major Transportation Routes in Vancouver are to close or are going to be restricted Expect 135,000 spectators per day in Vancouver Plus 60,000 persons at Vancouver Celebration Sites In addition, you can expect 10,000 media, 5,500 athletes, 55,000-person workforce, for a grand total 265,000 additional people in Vancouver City and area. That is not including an estimated 58,000 spectators per day travelling to Whistler. As stated on the City of Vancouver website: “Residents, businesses and visitors can expect rush hour conditions and parking restrictions in Downtown Vancouver 24 hours a day during Games time.” Further, the Vancouver Sun in March 2009 stated: “Any given night would be equivalent to the crush after a summer fireworks night coupled with a Madonna Concert.” This may indicate that traffic will be slow and congested during night, but really, the events will occur during both night time hours as well as day time hours. Can you say gridlock? Where are the Trouble Spots? The following are trouble spots in Vancouver: | - Canada Hockey Place (GM Place) | - Vancouver Olympic Centre (Curling) | | - Pacific Coliseum | - UBC Thunderbird Arena | | - BC Place (Non-Competition Venue) | - Main Media Centre (Non-Competition Venue) | | - Olympic Village (Non-Competition Venue) | - David Lam Park (Celebration Site) | | - Georgia & Beatty Bdlg. (Celebration Site) |
The following are trouble spots in Richmond: | – Olympic Oval | – Heineken House (Celebration Site) |
The following are trouble spots in Whistler: | –Whistler Sliding Centre | –Whistler Media Centre (Non-Competition Venue) | | –Whistler Creekside | –Whistler Medals Plaza (Non-Competition Venue) | | –Whistler Olympic Park |
The follwing are trouble spots in West Vancouver: - Cypress Mountain The Olympics will mainly affect transporters and carriers moving in between depots in Burnaby and Vancouver. The main transportation corridors affected are: Leading to Vancouver City (through Vancouver and Burnaby): Highway 1, Marine Drive, Hastings, Kingsway. North South Corridors include: Boundary Road and Granville Street. Things to do in Advance: There are several things that you can do in advance of the games in preparation: Order goods and services well in advance Schedule seasonal maintenance before Feb 1, 2010 If receiving goods at or near a venue site, see if they can be delivered before Feb 1stor after Feb 28th Talk to your transporters on how your schedule might be adjusted to accommodate traffic delays or extended loading hour
Expect the Unexpected: Overall summary of what to expect during the Olympics: Expect Delays Expect Transporters to have difficulty from getting site to site Be flexible in making transportation pick up arrangements and pick up times. If you are not flexible, this could result in a reduction of the number of pick-ups we are able to make. Author: T. Garnes
